Mai Bhago
The story
Mai Bhago is remembered for inspiring the forty deserters to return to Guru Gobind Singh Ji and fight at Khidrana.
History & context
Mai Bhago, from Jhabal in the Majha region, challenged the forty Sikhs who had left Guru Gobind Singh Ji during the siege of Anandpur. According to the district's historical account, she travelled through neighbouring villages, challenged their decision and inspired them to return to the Guru. She then joined them in the battle at Khidrana, where she fought alongside the Sikhs and was wounded. She survived the battle and remained in Guru Gobind Singh Ji's presence afterwards.
Why it matters
Her courage and role in bringing the forty Sikhs back to Guru Gobind Singh Ji form an important part of the story of the Chali Mukte.
