Maghi Mela
The story
The annual Maghi gathering commemorates the forty Mukte and brings pilgrims to Sri Muktsar Sahib every January.
History & context
Maghi Mela is the major annual religious gathering of Sri Muktsar Sahib. The District Administration says the event takes place every year after Lohri in January and commemorates the valour and sacrifice of the forty Mukte who died at the Battle of Khidrana. Pilgrims traditionally visit the sacred tank and participate in religious observances. The town takes on a large festive character during the gathering.
Why it matters
Maghi Mela connects the city's annual religious life with the historic sacrifice of the Chali Mukte.
