The Chali Mukte
The story
The forty Sikhs remembered as the Chali Mukte gave their lives at Khidrana in 1705 and became central to the identity of Sri Muktsar Sahib.
History & context
During the siege of Anandpur, forty Sikhs had separated from Guru Gobind Singh Ji after signing a disclaimer. Mai Bhago later inspired them to return to the Guru and they joined him at Khidrana. On 29 December 1705, they fought against the pursuing Mughal forces and were killed in the battle. According to the District Sri Muktsar Sahib history, Guru Gobind Singh Ji later blessed them as the Chali Mukte, the Forty Liberated Ones. Khidrana subsequently became known as Sri Muktsar Sahib — the Pool of Liberation.
Why it matters
The Chali Mukte are at the heart of the historical and spiritual identity of Sri Muktsar Sahib.
