Tuti Gandi Sahib

Sri Darbar Sahib is the principal historic shrine of Sri Muktsar Sahib and stands on the western bank of the historic sarovar.

The shrine is also known as Gurdwara Tuti Gandi Sahib. The name Tuti Gandi refers to the breaking and restoration of the bond between Guru Gobind Singh Ji and the Forty Sikhs who had earlier separated from him at Anandpur Sahib.

According to the historic tradition associated with the shrine, the Forty Sikhs returned to Guru Gobind Singh Ji and fought in the Battle of Muktsar. After the battle, Guru Gobind Singh Ji tore the document through which they had disassociated themselves from him.

The District Sri Muktsar Sahib Administration records that the earliest shrine at the site was established by the first Sikh families who settled here around 1743.

Additions to the shrine were carried out by Bhai Desu Singh and Bhai Lal Singh, chiefs of Kaithal, and later by Sardar Hari Singh Nalwa, one of Maharaja Ranjit Singh's generals.

During the 1930s, Sant Gurmukh Singh Karsevavale and Sant Sadhu Singh renovated the building, including marble panelling, decorative domes and marble paving.

The building was reconstructed during the 1980s. A high tower and flagpost near Darbar Sahib were raised by Maharaja Hira Singh of Nabha during the 1880s.

An old van tree traditionally associated with Guru Gobind Singh Ji is preserved between the Divan Asthan and Nishan Sahib.
